Category 6 cable cat 6 is a standardized twisted pair cable for ethernet and other network physical layers that is backward compatible with the category 5 5e and category 3 cable standards. It may have double interior pair separators and or a rigid jacket with a gear shaped interior wall to create interior air space and decrease. The cable standard specifies performance of up to 250 mhz compared to 100 mhz for cat 5 and cat 5e. Cat6a utp cable design differs among manufacturers. Every level exceeds tia 568 c 2 s performance and are produced with belden s superior quality. Cat 6 has to meet more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise than cat 5 and cat 5e. That speed comes with a price however as cat 6 cables are more expensive than cat 5 and cat 5e variants.

Comtran cable recently announced that because of improved geometric engineering the company has been able to reduce the size of two of its highest performing unshielded twisted pair cables comtran s category 6 cable as well as its enhanced category 6 cable which it dubs cat 6e and tests to 550 mhz have been reduced in outside diameter.
